OpenAI CEO Sam Altman finalises deal with US government amid Trump’s war with Anthropic

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a significant partnership with the US Department of War (DoW) to deploy its AI models within the classified network, emphasizing safety and responsible use. In a post on X, Altman stressed that OpenAI upholds principles against domestic mass surveillance and emphasizes human accountability in autonomous weapon systems. The agreement includes implementing technical safeguards compliant with DoW requirements and deploying Federated Data Environments (FDEs) to run exclusively on secure cloud networks. Altman urged the DoW to extend similar terms to all AI companies to foster collaboration over confrontation. In parallel, OpenAI secured a multi-year partnership with Amazon, featuring a $50 billion investment aimed at accelerating AI innovation. This includes jointly developing a Stateful Runtime Environment through Amazon Bedrock. These developments occur amidst heightened tensions as President Trump banned federal agencies from using Anthropic, further dividing opinions within Silicon Valley regarding AI safety and responsibility.
