OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of the Sora app, which gained significant traction, reaching one million downloads within five days of its launch in September. The decision, shared via a post on X, reflects OpenAI’s need to cut costs amidst a push for a $730 billion valuation and potential IPO plans. Despite Sora’s initial success, user engagement has waned. Previously, a partnership with Disney, involving a $1 billion investment, allowed users to create content featuring over 200 characters from franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. OpenAI is now refocusing its priorities, retracting from the Instant Checkout feature and integrating its ChatGPT, web browser, and Codex into a single desktop super app. CEO Fidji Simo emphasized a shift towards productivity and competitiveness in the enterprise space, aiming to execute high-impact use cases effectively. The company has committed to ensuring users’ work is preserved as they transition away from video generation.
