OpenAI is removing ChatGPT conversations from Google

OpenAI has decided to discontinue a controversial feature that enabled shared ChatGPT conversations to appear in search results. This decision follows public backlash highlighted by a Fast Company article, which revealed thousands of indexed ChatGPT chats in Google. Although these conversations didn’t contain explicit identifying information, some included specific details potentially identifiable to sources. This feature, labeled as “Make this chat discoverable,” was part of a process allowing users to create shareable links. Users could inadvertently expose sensitive content by ticking this option. OpenAI’s chief information security officer, Dane Stuckey, initially defended the clarity of this labeling but later acknowledged that it posed risks of accidental information sharing. Consequently, OpenAI has removed the discovery option, prioritizing user privacy and data security. This change reflects the company’s commitment to safeguarding user conversations while maintaining transparency in its features.
