OpenAI promises more ‘granular control’ to copyright owners after Sora 2 generates videos of popular characters | OpenAI

OpenAI is enhancing copyright control for content creators following the launch of Sora 2, an AI-powered video generator that sparked concerns over unauthorized use of copyrighted characters from popular shows like SpongeBob SquarePants and Pokémon. Initially released on an invite-only basis, Sora 2 allows users to create videos from text prompts. OpenAI informed talent agencies that they must opt out if they want to protect their intellectual property. The company offers a “copyright disputes form” for reporting infringements but lacks a blanket opt-out option for individual artists. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman stated they are responding to user and rights holder feedback, aiming to provide “granular control” over character use. Altman highlighted the potential for “interactive fan fiction” engagements and expressed intentions to compensate rights holders whose characters are generated. OpenAI plans to experiment with revenue-sharing models to sustain the platform while ensuring rights holder interests are respected.
