OpenAI taps Apple talent and suppliers for AI hardware push

OpenAI is intensifying its efforts to develop AI-powered hardware, actively recruiting from Apple’s workforce. Since early 2025, the company has hired over two dozen former Apple employees, including experts in design, wearables, and supply chains. This hiring surge follows OpenAI’s acquisition of io Products, a hardware startup co-founded by former Apple design head Jony Ive, with Tang Tan now serving as OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer. Notable hires include experienced professionals from various Apple divisions, motivated by better collaboration and less bureaucracy. OpenAI is exploring various devices such as screenless smart speakers, smart glasses, and wearable technology, with initial assembly slated for Luxshare, a key Apple supplier. The first product is anticipated by late 2026 or early 2027. Amid these losses, Apple appears concerned about talent poaching, leading to the cancellation of its annual offsite meeting in China. The situation has fueled frustration within Apple regarding product development and stock performance.
