OpenAI plans to expand its workforce from 4,500 to around 8,000 employees by year-end, focusing on product development, engineering, research, and sales. This increase comes as OpenAI aims to strengthen its position against competitors like Anthropic, developer of the Claude platform. The Financial Times reports that OpenAI has leased over 1 million square feet in San Francisco and intends to hire approximately 12 employees daily. However, a spokesperson from OpenAI challenged claims that businesses are choosing Anthropic over them at a three-to-one rate, emphasizing that large enterprises don’t rely on credit card data for purchasing decisions. CEO Fidji Simo is leading a strategic shift to prioritize business customers and is also developing a “super app” that integrates ChatGPT, Codex, and a browser, aiming to streamline productivity and enhance user experience. This initiative represents a significant pivot towards a more disciplined commercial focus for OpenAI.
