Four OpenAI researchers, Shengjia Zhao, Shuchao Bi, Jiahui Yu, and Hongyu Ren, are leaving to join Meta’s superintelligence team, as confirmed by sources to WIRED. Their OpenAI Slack profiles have been deactivated, marking a significant departure amidst Meta’s push to compete in artificial general intelligence. Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that Meta has been making large offers, including $100 million signing bonuses, to recruit OpenAI staff, though he noted that none of OpenAI’s top talents had accepted them. Hongyu Ren previously led post-training efforts for OpenAI’s mini models, while Zhao contributed to the GPT-4 model. Yu had experience at Google DeepMind, and Bi managed multimodal models at OpenAI. This move follows the departure of three researchers from OpenAI’s Zurich office, indicating ongoing talent shifts in the AI sector. OpenAI and Meta have not yet commented on these changes.
