OpenAI is set to introduce ads on ChatGPT as it seeks to enhance revenue streams amid challenges from its paid user base, which consists of only 5% of its 800 million users. The company, valued at about $500 billion, relies primarily on subscriptions—offering plans like Go at $5, Plus at $20, and Pro at $200, alongside custom enterprise pricing. With the intention to go public, OpenAI is contemplating ad placements, given that focus groups indicate users already perceive ChatGPT answers as potentially influenced by sponsorship. Additionally, around 20% of OpenAI’s workforce consists of former Meta employees, which may drive its shifting focus toward advertising—a trend referred to as “Meta-fication.” To capture a wider audience and boost revenue, OpenAI is rolling out its Go plan in more European countries at competitive prices, and is also offering purchasable credits for its Codex and Sora services.
