OpenAI has reportedly served subpoenas to civil society groups and individuals advocating for stricter AI regulations, including key supporters of California’s new AI law, SB 53. Nathan Calvin from Encode, a vocal critic of OpenAI’s for-profit shift, received a subpoena demanding his communications regarding SB 53. He claims this is an intimidation tactic linked to OpenAI’s ongoing lawsuit against Elon Musk, rejecting any ties between Encode and Musk. OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, stated that these subpoenas are standard procedure for evidence preservation in their legal dispute and not an attack on Encode. The Midas Project also received similar subpoenas, raising concerns that these actions may aim to undermine opposition to OpenAI’s transition to a $500 billion for-profit model. Internally, OpenAI faces dissent, with some feeling its tactics could jeopardize public trust in its mission for responsible AI development.
