OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has partnered with NextDC, an Australian data centre operator, to establish a multibillion-dollar AI centre in Sydney. This collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, aims to develop an artificial intelligence campus featuring a “supercluster” of graphics processing units (GPUs) in western Sydney. The project is anticipated to generate about Aus$7 billion (US$4.6 billion) and create thousands of jobs in construction, technology, manufacturing, engineering, and operations. NextDC’s stock rose by 4.1% following the announcement. The AI centre will utilize long-term power purchase agreements for renewable energy and innovative cooling technologies that do not require drinking water. Treasurer Jim Chalmers highlighted this initiative as a crucial step towards leveraging Australia’s talent and clean energy resources, asserting that such partnerships will enhance job creation and facilitate broader AI adoption across the economy.
