OpenAI has launched a new monetization strategy for its Sora AI video generation tool, allowing power users to purchase extra credits. The cost for an additional 10 video generations will be $4 via the Apple App Store. Currently, users can generate up to 30 free videos daily; however, this limit may decrease as OpenAI expands its services. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, announced on X that adjustments are necessary due to GPU limitations and assured users of transparency in the process. Additionally, OpenAI plans to monetize by enabling rightsholders to license their copyrighted content, providing opportunities for monetized cameos of popular characters. This strategy raises concerns, especially as the company faces legal challenges from Cameo regarding trademark infringement. OpenAI’s actions reflect its ongoing efforts to innovate within the text-to-video realm while navigating complex legal landscapes.
