OpenAI announced it will begin displaying ads in ChatGPT for adult U.S. users in both free and ChatGPT Go tiers. The initiative aims to enhance accessibility to artificial general intelligence (AGI) while supporting small businesses. OpenAI assures users that their data and conversations remain private and are not sold to advertisers. Users will have control over their ad experience, including the option to turn off personalization. Ads will appear clearly labeled at the bottom of conversations, with measures in place to ensure they do not influence chatbot responses. OpenAI will not show ads to users predicted to be under 18 and will avoid sensitive topics like health or politics. CEO Sam Altman emphasized that this model seeks to accommodate users who want AI access without financial barriers. This shift from a subscription-only model reflects OpenAI’s strategy to sustain its growth, with 800 million weekly active users reported as of October 2025.
