OpenAI is reportedly developing a consumer device, codenamed “Gumdrop,” following previous attempts by companies like Humane with their AI Pin, which was discontinued due to poor reception. Gumdrop is expected to feature a compact, pen-shaped design, created in collaboration with famed ex-Apple designer Jony Ive. The device will integrate functionalities like a camera and microphone, allowing it to convert handwritten notes into digital text and interface with ChatGPT. Initially, Luxshare was considered for manufacturing, but OpenAI opted for Foxconn to produce the device in the US or Vietnam. This launch positions Gumdrop as a potential “third core device” alongside the iPhone and MacBook. However, it raises questions about its unique capabilities compared to smartphones. Speculation suggests it may serve as a “reality scraper” to gather data for training Large Language Models (LLMs), though its primary aim might simply be to offer a novel wearable tech option for users.
