OpenAI is set to revolutionize the animation industry with its feature-length film, “Critterz,” scheduled for a 2026 worldwide release, following a Cannes premiere. Utilizing AI technologies like GPT-5, the film will significantly reduce production time to nine months and a budget under $30 million, contrasting with the traditional three-year timeline and higher costs for animated features. “Critterz” follows forest animals on an adventure disrupted by a newcomer, stemming from concepts pioneered by Chad Nelson at OpenAI. Native Foreign and Vertigo Films are collaborating to merge AI with traditional techniques, employing human voice actors and artist sketches processed through OpenAI’s tools. This project aims to showcase AI’s potential to Hollywood amidst growing concerns regarding intellectual property, especially following lawsuits involving major studios against AI firms. OpenAI perceives “Critterz” as a pivotal case study to encourage the industry’s acceptance of AI technology.
