OpenAI Unveils Stargate Norway AI Data Center with 100K GPUs

OpenAI has embarked on a significant European initiative with the launch of Stargate Norway, a large-scale data center in Narvik, designed to be one of Europe’s largest AI infrastructure hubs. This project, announced on July 31, 2025, partners OpenAI with Aker ASA and Nscale Global Holdings, utilizing Norway’s abundant renewable energy. The center will initially deliver 230 megawatts of capacity, expanding to 290 megawatts, and aims to deploy 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026, establishing an “AI Gigafactory.” This venture addresses rising AI complexities and Europe’s regulatory landscape on data sovereignty and sustainability. OpenAI’s project is also expected to create jobs in Narvik while contributing to green tech initiatives. It represents a strategic move to balance scale, sustainability, and sovereignty in AI, with broader implications for OpenAI’s international strategy and competition with tech giants like Google and Meta.
