OpenAI is set to begin testing advertisements in the free version of ChatGPT for adult users in the US, while keeping its Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans ad-free. This strategy follows the recent launch of its low-cost Go offering and aims to create a significant revenue stream for the company, which pioneered the current AI wave with ChatGPT in 2022. The ads will be clearly labeled and displayed at the bottom of ChatGPT responses, ensuring they won’t influence the AI’s outputs. Users will have the option to deactivate personalization and delete ad-related data anytime. OpenAI reassures users that it does not sell personal data to advertisers. This initiative reflects the company’s ambitious growth, with over $1.4 trillion in infrastructure deals reported for 2025 and a projected annual revenue run rate of $20 billion.
