OpenAI is expanding its budget-friendly ChatGPT Go plan, priced under $5, to 16 Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Users in some regions can pay in local currencies, while others use USD, with costs influenced by local tax rates. ChatGPT Go offers higher daily limits for messaging and image uploads, as well as enhanced memory for personalized responses. Since its launch in India and Indonesia, OpenAI’s active user base has surged, doubling in India alone. This expansion positions OpenAI in direct competition with Google, which introduced its Google AI Plus plan in September. At the recent DevDay 2025 conference, CEO Sam Altman announced an increase in global users to 800 million and highlighted a shift towards making ChatGPT a multifunctional ecosystem akin to an app store. Despite substantial operating losses of $7.8 billion in early 2025, OpenAI’s strategic offerings aim for long-term profitability and market dominance in Asia.
