OpenAI has successfully completed a Nonprofit Jam in four major Indian cities—Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, and New Delhi—to promote AI adoption in the social sector. Over 200 nonprofit organizations participated in workshops aimed at illustrating how AI can enhance social impact, optimize operations, and improve service delivery. Pragya Misra, head of strategy at OpenAI India, emphasized that nonprofits, despite limited resources, are pioneering AI use to serve millions. The initiative, in collaboration with Karya and Wadhwani AI, highlighted applications like Haqdarshak’s AI-driven database, which swiftly updates information about government welfare schemes in multiple languages. This accessibility helps marginalized communities understand their entitlements. Experts noted the importance of local context in AI implementation, advocating for fine-tuning models to enhance relevance. Misra underscored the nonprofit sector’s potential to lead AI adoption, while Doegar called for increased investment in research to extend AI benefits to underserved populations.
