OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.1, an enhanced version of its GPT-5 model released in August, designed to improve the user experience of ChatGPT. The update features two variants: GPT-5.1 Instant, which offers a warmer, smarter, and more compliant interaction, and GPT-5.1 Thinking, known for its clarity and efficiency on simple tasks while maintaining persistence on complex inquiries. This rollout, starting this week, will automatically assign user queries to the appropriate model, with previous GPT-5 versions accessible for three months as “legacy models.” Additionally, OpenAI has expanded personality presets, allowing for customizable conversational tones. A new fine-tuning experiment will let select users adjust ChatGPT’s conversational style. Despite initial excitement, GPT-5 faced criticism for lack of substantial improvements, leading OpenAI to reintroduce GPT-4o shortly after its launch. Meanwhile, Microsoft considers alternatives amid competitive pressures from models by Anthropic. Users can also explore OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Atlas, featuring an AI-powered web browser.
