OpenAI rolls out new model built for speed, coding

OpenAI is launching GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, its inaugural AI model utilizing chips from Cerebras Systems, marking a strategic shift to diversify chip partnerships beyond Nvidia. Designed as a faster, albeit less powerful alternative to its Codex software, GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark aims to enhance coding efficiency for software engineers, allowing task interruptions and quick completions. This model is set for release on Thursday, following a $10 billion agreement with Cerebras to facilitate quicker AI responses. OpenAI also expands its ecosystem by collaborating with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Broadcom to meet its growing computing demands. The partnership with Nvidia remains critical, with both companies acknowledging their foundational relationship despite recent tensions. As competition intensifies in the AI coding assistant market against players like Alphabet and Anthropic, OpenAI’s Codex boasts over 1 million weekly users. Initially, GPT-5.3 will be accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers as a research preview.
