OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the newest update for ChatGPT, which is gradually becoming available to all users. Unlike previous rollouts, GPT-5 is accessible to both paid and free customers, though it initially appeared only on iPhone, with Mac and web versions remaining on GPT-4o. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, noted the rollout’s complexity, citing a significant spike in API traffic and issues with GPT-5’s “autoswitcher,” which impacted its perceived intelligence. This unified model aims to automatically adapt to user queries, streamlining the experience. In response to customer feedback, OpenAI plans to enhance transparency regarding which model is being utilized and will allow users to select their model. Plus customers ($20/month) can still switch to GPT-4o temporarily, while usage limits for GPT-5 will be doubled. Additionally, Apple is set to upgrade ChatGPT integration to GPT-5 in iOS 26, promoting a healthier usage pattern for ChatGPT.
