The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has taken a firm stance against OpenAI’s new invite-only app, Sora 2, which allows users to create hyperrealistic videos featuring characters from major studios. MPA CEO Charles Rivkin demanded that OpenAI take “immediate and decisive action” to protect intellectual property (IP), as unauthorized content has surged since Sora 2’s launch. Rivkin emphasized that safeguarding against infringement is OpenAI’s responsibility, not the rights holders’. Historically, the MPA has been vocal against piracy, representing giants like Disney and Netflix. Recently, OpenAI indicated it would enhance controls for character generation, a response likely influenced by legal challenges from studios against AI tools. Additionally, talent agency WME announced all its clients would opt out of having their likenesses used within Sora 2. Rivkin’s urgent messaging may signal a pivotal moment in Hollywood’s approach to collaborating with tech giants regarding AI’s implications in the entertainment industry.
