OpenAI has recently added Google Cloud to its list of suppliers, signaling a strategic shift to diversify its computing resources away from its longstanding partner, Microsoft. This development, finalized in May after extensive negotiations, aims to support OpenAI’s growing demand for computational power, enhancing Google Cloud’s competitive position against Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. Currently, OpenAI collaborates with several suppliers, including Microsoft and Oracle, leveraging a diversified supply chain to mitigate risks and boost bargaining power. Earlier this year, OpenAI launched a $500 billion Stargate infrastructure project and signed a $12 billion multi-year agreement with CoreWeave. Following adjustments in Microsoft’s collaboration model, the relationship between the two companies has evolved, with Microsoft shifting to a preferential supply model. This partnership is poised to enhance OpenAI’s capacity to deliver AI tools like ChatGPT across various regions, while Google stands to gain significantly in its cloud business.
