OpenAI and Common Sense Media have united to advance the Parents & Kids Safe AI Act, a ballot measure aimed at amending the California Constitution to enhance child safety regarding companion chatbots. Initially, both organizations proposed separate initiatives, but they merged to present a cohesive plan. The Act mandates that chatbot developers implement age estimation technology, conduct independent audits for child safety, and prohibit child-targeted advertising without parental consent. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to prevent emotional manipulation by banning AI from fostering isolation or simulating relationships with minors. To qualify for the November ballot, the measure must gather 546,651 signatures by June 25. This collaboration reflects a significant shift in OpenAI’s approach and highlights a crucial effort to safeguard youth as research shows 70% of teens use chatbots, raising concerns over their potential dangers. The initiative aims to establish comprehensive regulations prioritizing young users’ safety in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
