OpenAI has strategically added Google Cloud to its roster of cloud service providers, signaling a shift to diversify its computing resources beyond its long-time partner, Microsoft. This partnership, finalized in May after months of negotiations, aims to meet the rising computational demands for deploying large-scale AI models, positioning Google Cloud competitively against Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. OpenAI’s strategy includes reducing reliance on a single supplier—currently involving Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave—to enhance bargaining power and minimize supply chain risks. Earlier this year, OpenAI initiated significant infrastructure projects and a near $12 billion agreement with CoreWeave. The new collaboration allows Google Cloud to support OpenAI’s ChatGPT and APIs across various global regions, including the U.S. and Europe. Microsoft has transitioned from an exclusivity model with OpenAI to retaining priority supply rights, reflecting the evolving dynamics in their partnership. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the critical need for high-end computing resources to meet the growing demands of AI solutions.
