OpenAI has forged a new partnership to provide access to its AI models to U.S. defense and government agencies via Amazon’s AWS for both classified and unclassified applications. This collaboration comes after OpenAI secured a Pentagon contract, succeeding Anthropic, which previously held a $200 million contract with the defense department but faced termination due to concerns over restricted military use of its AI technologies. The Pentagon deemed Anthropic a “supply chain risk” after it declined to permit uses like domestic surveillance. OpenAI’s deal with AWS marks a significant shift as it steps into classified operations, enhancing its presence in government contracts—an essential area for growth given its potential to attract corporate clients. Following its transition to a for-profit model, OpenAI has also realigned its agreement with Microsoft, allowing partnerships with other cloud providers for national security clients, illustrating a strategic move in the competitive AI landscape.
