Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix secured pivotal contracts to supply chips and equipment for Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s Stargate project, solidifying their leadership in AI memory chips. Samsung’s other branches, including SDS, C&T, and Heavy Industries, are also exploring partnerships with OpenAI for floating data centers and infrastructure design. Additionally, SK Telecom will collaborate with OpenAI to develop a dedicated AI data center in South Korea. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman formalized these partnerships in Seoul, aiming to revolutionize AI infrastructure. The Stargate initiative, supported by major players like Nvidia and Oracle, anticipates a demand for 900,000 wafers monthly, surpassing existing HBM capacity. Altman’s tour also includes discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Hon Hai.
