OpenAI Collaborates with SoftBank’s Arm and Broadcom on In-House AI Chips

OpenAI is venturing into the development of proprietary artificial intelligence chips, a move that offers significant benefits to SoftBank, a key investor in OpenAI’s data center expansion. This initiative, positioning OpenAI at the forefront of the AI hardware sector, involves collaboration with SoftBank’s Arm subsidiary and semiconductor leader Broadcom. Reports indicate that OpenAI is working with Arm to create a central processing unit (CPU) designed to complement its AI server chip, co-designed with Broadcom. Arm anticipates the deployment of this CPU alongside OpenAI’s custom chips and major offerings from Nvidia and AMD. CPUs serve a vital function by managing general computing tasks, while AI accelerators tackle intensive machine learning. Additionally, Arm’s shift from merely selling chip designs to developing its own CPUs marks a strategic transformation. OpenAI and Broadcom will produce these proprietary AI processors, with deployment expected to commence in late 2026.
