OpenAI is reportedly developing a new browser codenamed “Aura.” Recent indications show that an early version features a “New Tab Page” offering various shortcuts, mirroring typical browser homepages. This page was temporarily accessible, hinting it’s connected to Aura. Additionally, in agent mode, users may find a “use cloud browser” option, suggesting that the browser will function natively, allowing seamless data access without repeated logins. This feature appears to be optional and managed via a toggle. Notably, the hidden “Use cloud browser” option in the new ChatGPT web app is only available for users on Chrome for Mac, implying Aura is Chromium-based and set for an initial macOS launch. This strategy contrasts with Perplexity, which aims for simultaneous launches on both Mac and Windows. Meanwhile, Microsoft Edge might introduce similar functionalities due to its collaboration with OpenAI. The launch strategy of Aura poses an intriguing question in the competitive browser landscape.
