OpenAI has quickly retracted a feature that allowed ChatGPT conversations to be indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. Initially intended as a “short-lived experiment,” the “Make this chat discoverable” option enabled users to share chats but inadvertently exposed numerous private discussions, containing personal information, to the public. OpenAI’s CISO, Dane Stuckey, acknowledged the oversight, stating the feature created “too many opportunities” for accidental sharing. Although links were removed from search indices, some indexed chats remained initially visible.
