OpenAI recently addressed the White House through a letter from Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, seeking support for their big data center construction plans. The letter, directed to Michael Kratsios, proposed expanding the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit (AMIC) from 35% to include not just semiconductor fabrication, but also components for electrical grids, AI servers, and data centers. Lehane emphasized that broader AMIC coverage would reduce capital costs, mitigate investment risks, and unlock private funding for AI infrastructure. He also urged quicker permitting and environmental reviews for AI projects and suggested establishing a strategic reserve of essential raw materials. The letter gained traction following comments from OpenAI executives, with CFO Sarah Friar clarifying that the company is not seeking financial guarantees from the government, aligning with CEO Sam Altman’s view against government intervention in market dynamics. OpenAI aims for over $20 billion in revenue by 2025, growing significantly by 2030.
