Altman assured users that the technology would explicitly be barred from such uses and would not be utilized by intelligence agencies like the NSA. Following backlash on platforms like X and Reddit, where users pushed for a “delete ChatGPT” movement, Altman acknowledged the rushed nature of the agreement, emphasizing the need for clearer communication. Over 890 employees from OpenAI and Google signed an open letter opposing the use of AI for surveillance and autonomous warfare, calling for ethical considerations. Critics, including former OpenAI policy head Miles Brundage, raised doubts about how OpenAI secured this deal against the backdrop of Anthropic’s moral stance against such uses.
