OpenAI Strikes a Pentagon Deal, Hours After Anthropic Was Cut

OpenAI has secured a partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD) for its AI models, announced by CEO Sam Altman. This agreement follows the Pentagon’s decision to cut ties with competitor Anthropic, citing concerns over surveillance and autonomous weapons. The DoD is now labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk, potentially jeopardizing its dealings with U.S. businesses. Altman emphasized that the DoD shares OpenAI’s core safety principles, including prohibitions on mass surveillance and human accountability in weapon systems. In a related development, President Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s technology, asserting the need to distance the military from the company. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that no contractors associated with the military could engage in commercial activities with Anthropic. The latter vowed to challenge its supply chain risk designation, insisting it would not compromise its stance on critical safety issues.
