OpenAI has expanded its Bay Area presence by leasing a 202,000-square-foot industrial building at 1411 Harbour Way South in Richmond. This waterfront property, previously developed for bankrupt battery startup Moxion Power, is well-equipped with over 14,000 amps of power, ideal for energy-intensive robotics and advanced manufacturing. This move represents OpenAI’s first expansion across the Bay Bridge, highlighting its commitment to robotics initiatives. The company has been actively hiring robotics engineers and aims to establish a humanoid robotics lab in San Francisco. Additionally, OpenAI is set to open a second robotics-focused facility in Richmond, following recent job postings. The lease supports OpenAI’s broader strategy to enhance its real estate portfolio, which includes a 280,000-square-foot sublease at the former Dropbox HQ in Mission Bay and 450,000 square feet in Mountain View, totaling over 1 million square feet in commercial space across the region.
