OpenAI is set to establish a massive data center in India with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, according to Bloomberg. This initiative aims to enhance its Stargate AI infrastructure and strengthen local partnerships. While the exact location and timeline remain unconfirmed, the announcement could coincide with CEO Sam Altman’s visit to India this month. The facility is expected to customize AI chatbots for users and address concerns about data protection. Altman has noted the impressive growth of ChatGPT adoption in India, with user numbers increasing fourfold in the past year. OpenAI’s recent initiatives include launching a ₹399/month ChatGPT Go subscription and opening a New Delhi office, complemented by hiring for key roles. Additionally, partnerships with the IndianAI Mission and the Ministry of Education will provide 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses, reinforcing the significance of AI as a learning tool for millions of students in India.
