OpenAI plans to nearly double its workforce to about 8,000 by year-end, focusing on strengthening its enterprise strategy amid competition from rivals like Anthropic and Google. This hiring expansion covers engineering, research, product, and sales roles aimed at enhancing business adoption of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI’s efforts come after completing a $110 billion fundraising round in February 2026, which bolstered its valuation to $730 billion and its global computing capacity. The company is also laying groundwork for a potential IPO in Q4 2026, which could be one of the largest tech IPOs, comparable to SpaceX’s planned public offering. However, OpenAI faces challenges, including the risk of an oversized workforce if enterprise adoption is slower than anticipated, as well as multiple lawsuits concerning training data and intellectual property, which could impact its appeal to potential enterprise customers.
