The Stargate project, spearheaded by OpenAI in collaboration with Oracle, SoftBank, and other tech giants, is set to build five new datacenters in the U.S. as part of a $500 billion initiative to enhance AI computing capabilities. The new sites will be located in Shackelford and Milam Counties in Texas, Doña Ana County in New Mexico, Lordstown, Ohio, and an undisclosed Midwest location, adding to an existing facility in Abilene, Texas. This expansion will elevate Stargate’s total compute capacity to seven gigawatts over three years, with aspirations to reach 10 gigawatts by year-end. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, emphasizes the necessity of robust compute power to unlock AI’s full potential and is optimistic about the project’s progress. Additionally, a 230-megawatt datacenter is planned for Norway, along with further developments in the UK’s Northeast. While the project aims to create 25,000 jobs, details regarding infrastructure costs remain unaddressed.
