OpenAI doubles down on Korea with new Seoul office

OpenAI has officially launched its Korean subsidiary, marking its third Asia office and 12th globally. Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon emphasized Korea’s unique tech ecosystem, citing its advanced infrastructure and innovative companies as ideal for AI growth. OpenAI is actively seeking partnerships with major players like Samsung Electronics and SK Group to develop data centers and hardware. Korea has become OpenAI’s second-largest market for paid ChatGPT subscriptions, experiencing a fourfold increase in weekly active users. Additionally, an alliance with Kakao for ChatGPT integration is in progress. OpenAI also aims to strengthen academic links, planning a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University. Kwon noted Korea’s “full-stack” AI capabilities and hinted at potential collaborations with the government to enhance AI sovereignty. While leadership announcements for OpenAI Korea are pending, Kwon assured further updates will follow. This expansion positions OpenAI as a significant contributor to Korea’s AI transformation.
