OpenAI Takes Steps to Reduce Political Bias in ChatGPT

OpenAI moves to make ChatGPT less politically biased

The research team developed approximately 500 prompts across 100 topics to assess how AI models, particularly ChatGPT, respond in realistic conversations rather than controlled tests. OpenAI identified five forms of political bias: personal political expression, emotional escalation, asymmetric framing, user invalidation, and political refusal. The findings reveal that ChatGPT remains objective with neutral prompts, but emotional and charged language, especially in liberal contexts, can lead to biased responses. The most frequent biases included personal opinions, one-sided perspectives, and emotional language. OpenAI aims to enhance behavioral neutrality in AI systems, aligning with its “Seeking the Truth Together” initiative. The focus is on reducing excessive agreeableness, often termed sycophancy, where AI tends to validate user opinions rather than offering balanced perspectives. This training bias encourages chatbots to prioritize user comfort over factual accuracy, potentially reinforcing biased viewpoints. Addressing these issues is crucial for developing a more impartial AI communication model.
