OpenAI Targets NATO Following Pentagon Agreement

After Pentagon deal, OpenAI sets its sights on NATO

OpenAI is in discussions to provide NATO with AI models similar to those behind ChatGPT for its unclassified networks. These negotiations, confirmed by the Wall Street Journal, highlight OpenAI’s strategy to target significant public sector organizations globally, especially after Anthropic’s unsuccessful bid to meet the Pentagon’s AI requirements. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged that the partnership could appear “opportunistic,” yet reassured that safety mechanisms will remain integral to the use of AI in military contexts. OpenAI has established clear boundaries against using their technology for mass surveillance, autonomous weapons, or high-stakes automated decisions. Although the NATO agreement is still in the exploratory phase, it signals an evolving trend where OpenAI aims to reduce reliance on consumer subscriptions in favor of stable public sector collaborations. However, concerns regarding data protection and European sovereignty may complicate such partnerships, as current European AI providers have yet to reach the level of OpenAI’s offerings.
