OpenAI is developing a model router to enhance user experience by automatically selecting the most suitable language model for inquiries within ChatGPT. Reported by VentureBeat, this feature aims to streamline the process for users navigating the seven available models in ChatGPT Plus and higher subscriptions. Since its launch, OpenAI has expanded its offerings, including models like GPT-4o, o4-mini, and GPT-4.5. Each model serves specific functions ranging from reasoning to creative tasks. The router will assist users, including professionals like doctors, in avoiding less effective models. OpenAI researcher Roon indicated that manual selection would still be an option, preserving user control. Additionally, Yuchen Jin, CTO of Hyperbolic Labs, confirmed that the router aligns with the forthcoming GPT-5, which will function based on input types rather than predetermined model names. This development could significantly lower entry barriers for users, enhancing the overall effectiveness of ChatGPT.
