On December 11, 2023, OpenAI launched its GPT-5.2 artificial intelligence model following an internal directive from CEO Sam Altman prioritizing its development due to competition from Google’s Gemini 3. The new GPT-5.2 model enhances general intelligence, coding capabilities, and long-context understanding, promising significant economic benefits for users. OpenAI noted improvements in tasks like spreadsheet creation, presentation building, and complex project management. Despite Google’s Gemini 3 showcasing strong performance metrics, Altman expressed that it has had a minimal impact on OpenAI’s metrics. Additionally, Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, allowing the use of its popular characters in the new Sora AI video generator. OpenAI clarified that it plans to keep GPT-5.1, GPT-5, and GPT-4.1 available in its API. The rollout of GPT-5.2 Instant, Thinking, and Pro began for paid users of ChatGPT on the same day.
