OpenAI is set to establish a state-of-the-art 2.2-million-square-foot data center in Saline Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, by early 2026. This facility will be crucial for advancing AI infrastructure in the U.S. and will require no additional power generation, thanks to a closed-loop cooling system that minimizes water use. DTE Energy will supply power without affecting local energy resources. Michigan was chosen due to its skilled workforce, expected to create 2,500 union construction jobs and 450 permanent high-paying roles, driving economic growth. Despite local concerns regarding environmental impacts and community character, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the project’s commitment to preserving over 700 acres of open space. In addition, Related Digital, involved in the development, pledged $14 million towards community investments. This initiative aligns with Michigan’s efforts to lead in advanced manufacturing and technology, contributing to over $450 billion in planned investments across multiple states.
