OpenAI has launched two new open-weight models, gpt-oss-120B and gpt-oss-20B, designed for efficient performance with minimal hardware, available on AWS via Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker. These models target edge use cases, making them suitable for regions with stringent data requirements due to their Apache 2.0 licensing, which promotes broader experimentation.

The gpt-oss-120B operates on a single 80 GB GPU, while the 20B variant requires only 16 GB of memory, delivering strong reasoning capabilities that aim to match or exceed the o4-mini model. Despite their promising features like a 128K context window, which supports complex tasks such as code generation and document analysis, independent performance assessments remain pending.

This strategic release positions OpenAI as a leading contender in the open model infrastructure space and solidifies its partnership with AWS, enhancing the ability to create scalable AI applications across diverse industries.
