In a meeting with OpenAI executives, Fraser emphasized the government’s expectation for rapid proposals to improve protocols. Concerns escalated after a Wall Street Journal report revealed OpenAI employees were discouraged from notifying law enforcement about violent conversations with the AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Prime Minister Mark Carney, reflecting on the tragic incident, stressed the necessity of preventive measures. Additionally, the Senate committee on Social Affairs plans to discuss AI governance, emphasizing security and access in Canada. Canadian Identity Minister Marc Miller and AI Minister Evan Solomon are also working on related legislation, including an online harms bill and a new AI strategy. Solomon expressed disappointment over the lack of concrete proposals from OpenAI, while calls for transparency and improved reporting standards continue.
