In a recent panel discussion titled “AI + Education: Teaching and Learning in the Age of AI,” Steve Jackson, Cornell’s vice provost for Academic Innovation, drew an analogy between microwave cooking and the current state of generative AI in education. He emphasized that while microwaves transformed cooking, they didn’t replace traditional ovens, highlighting a similar trajectory for AI tools in teaching. Jackson anticipates that, in five years, AI will be more effectively integrated into educational practices, as educators experiment and adopt evidence-based approaches to its use. Joined by fellow panelists David Mimno and doctoral student Jadon Geathers, the discussion explored the potential for AI to enhance learning outcomes.
