New AI tools from Penn Medicine, Wharton researchers aim to personalize kidney disease treatment

Researchers from the Wharton School and the Perelman School of Medicine have created new AI tools designed to personalize treatments for kidney disease patients. Led by Katalin Susztak from the Penn/CHOP Kidney Innovation Center, the study introduces CellSpectra, a computational tool that analyzes gene expression in kidney and lung cancer data. It assists in identifying the most effective treatments for individuals by dissecting cellular functions at a granular level. Additionally, the Species Integrated Single cell Kidney Atlas (SISKA) serves as a comprehensive resource mapping patient samples against extensive cellular datasets. With over 850 million people suffering from kidney disease globally, these innovative biomedical tools, including single-cell omics, aim to enhance patient characterization for tailored therapies, especially for diabetic kidney disease, the leading cause of renal failure. Overall, these advancements underscore AI’s potential in transforming kidney disease diagnosis and treatment, optimizing patient outcomes through targeted drug matching.
