The Pentagon has pushed big AI companies including Anthropic and OpenAI to make their AI tools available on classified networks without many of the standard restrictions that the companies apply to users, Reuters has reported.(Image: reuters)

The Pentagon is evaluating defense contractors’ dependence on Anthropic as it demands the AI provider remove existing safeguards ahead of a Friday deadline. A prolonged dispute exists between the Department of Defense (DoD) and Anthropic, with the latter unwilling to relax its restrictions on military applications. Recent discussions between Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei highlighted potential consequences for non-compliance, including designating Anthropic as a supply-chain risk or invoking legal measures to enforce rule changes. Contractors, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing, are being consulted regarding their reliance on the AI firm. Anthropic’s refusal to lift safeguards prevents its technology from being used for autonomous weapon targeting or U.S. surveillance. Notably, Anthropic’s AI was used successfully in a military operation against Venezuela’s President Maduro. Overall, the Pentagon’s ongoing push aims to integrate advanced AI capabilities into classified military networks.
