Perplexity has unveiled its new AI-powered web browser, Comet, signaling a significant evolution beyond traditional AI search. Built on Chromium, Comet features familiar elements like tabs and extensions but introduces a unique sidebar assistant that enhances user experiences by summarizing content, automating tasks, scheduling meetings, and filling forms. CEO Aravind Srinivas emphasizes Comet’s role as a cognitive operating system, merging navigation and automation seamlessly.
Unlike Google’s ad-driven approach, Comet focuses on user demands for faster, more accurate AI interactions, positioning the browser as a long-term interface for AI applications. The company aims to overcome typical browser challenges, differentiating Comet through accuracy, low latency, and user experience. Currently in early access for Max plan users, Comet plans to explore diverse business models, moving beyond advertising. With this release, Perplexity aims to redefine how AI tools integrate into daily workflows, enhancing user engagement beyond traditional search methods.
