Perplexity is expanding its presence in India, leveraging a strategic partnership with Bharti Airtel, the country’s second-largest telecom operator. This collaboration offers Airtel’s 360 million subscribers a free 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription, enhancing user acquisition in the world’s second-largest internet market. In Q2, Perplexity’s downloads soared by 600% YoY, reaching 2.8 million, outpacing OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which grew 587% to 46.7 million downloads. Moreover, Perplexity’s monthly active users in India surged by 640%, highlighting significant growth potential. The startup aims to compete with established players by targeting demographics that are currently underserved. However, it faces challenges in monetizing its user base, as it lags in revenue compared to ChatGPT. Despite price sensitivity in the Indian market, partnerships like the one with Airtel may help Perplexity boost its subscription base and attract investor interest through user growth and market diversification.
